Social Work Students Experiential Learning

On Friday, May 17, 2024, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year Social Work students visited different community agencies in Kiambu County for experiential learning on community development, community organization, and social development.  The field trip exposed students to community empowerment, economic empowerment of rural communities, transformative local leadership in community organization, social action for social change, appropriate technology for rural transformation, human-centered social work practice in community work among other key lessons.

Institute of Social Work Professionals Bill

On Tuesday, April 23, the Association of Social Work Educators in Kenya submitted their views and recommendations on the Institute of Social Work Professionals Bill to the Departmental Committee meeting at the National Assembly Main Chambers. Our Chair of the Department, Professor G.G Wairire,  was present in this meeting. The bill has the potential to enhance professionalism and effectiveness of social workers in Kenya, ultimately leading to improved outcomes for individuals, families, and communities.

 

Professor Edward Ontita leads CELARS project

The University of Nairobi hosted a kick-off consultancy meeting for stakeholders on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. The purpose of the meeting was to establish the Centre for Land Acquisition and Resettlement Studies (CELARs), which will be located in Kilimani, Nairobi. Various stakeholders, including the Kenya National Highways Authority, World Bank, Kenya School of Government, and AKI consultants, attended the meeting.

Certified Child Protection Agents Workshop

The University of Nairobi held a one-day symposium on Community Based Child Protection on November 23rd, 2023. This symposium was organized by the Department of Sociology, Social Works and African Women Studies in partnership with Stanbic Bank under the theme “Building Courageous Child Protection Communities in Kenya”. The symposium’s workstations resembled a kindergarten playroom. They were covered in colors, group charts, books, pens and individually folded Child Protection Community Maps.

UoN Collaboration with University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

A team from the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, led by the  Vice Chancellor for Global Affairs, Professor Ariel Armony, met with members from the Department of Sociology, Social Work and African Women's Studies to explore opportunities for staff and student collaboration. The UoN team was led by our Dean in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Professor Jack Odhiambo.
